PAC tournament

Fans of Waynesburg University Wrestling,

We are excited to be hosting the PAC tournament this Friday starting at 5:00.  We will  run the first 2 rounds on 2 mats and the final round on 1 mat.  We hope you will come out and support our team as we try to capture our second PAC title in back to back years.  Most recently the team knocked off West Liberty for the first time in the 3 years that we have put them back on our schedule.  This past weekend we won the John Summa Invitational for the first time, knocking off Brockport which had won it the previous 18 years.  We appreciate all the parents who have been traveling all year to support your son and the team.  We hope to have a great finish to go along with our dual meet final record of 12-2-1.   Here are a few articles from our past competitions.  Thanks for following the Jackets.

BEREA, Ohio (Feb. 5) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team won its third tournament title of the season on Saturday by taking top honors at the 25th annual John Summa Memorial Tournament, which was hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College.

The Yellow Jackets took home an event-high three individual championships on their way to 125 team points, which put them 6.5 points ahead of the host team, which placed second at 118.5. Ohio Northern placed third with 107.5 points.

Sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crown picked up the team’s first championship of the day by going 3-0 with a win by technical fall in the semifinal round. He took down B-W’s Jeremy Dombrady by the final score of 9-3 to claim the crown.

The Jackets’ two other titles came courtesy of two of their highly successful freshmen, starting with Luke Lohr at 149 pounds. Lohr, who was named the top seed of the bracket, went 3-0 with a win by pin and a victory by technical fall to reach the finals. Lohr beat SUNY-Brockport’s Elijah Golding by 6-1 decision in the finals. Golding, like Lohr, is listed as an honorable mention honoree in the d3wrestle.com national rankings.

The Jackets’ third championship was picked up by first-year heavyweight Brandon Fedorka. The rookie big man put together a 3-0 day that included a thrilling 2-1 win over top-seeded John Wilkinson of Brockport in the championship bout.

Along with the three champions, junior 174-pounder Jared Roberts made it to the title bout at his weight before defaulting out with a minor injury. Waynesburg also boasted a tournament-best three third-place performances. Freshman 197-pounder Jake Linn, sophomore 184-pounder Cody Catalina and junior 165-pounder Jon Sanko all put together bronze medal-worthy performances. Linn and Catalina ended their days with wins by fall.

Nick Garber (141), Garrett Johnston (157), Sam Lombardo (157), Anthony Bonaventura (165) and Tyler Lewis (197) all placed in the top six of their respective weight classes to complete Waynesburg’s successful day. Along with the Yellow Jackets’ win at the Summa, they also claimed team championships at this year’s Waynesburg Invitational and the season-opening Messiah Invitational. The Orange and Black will look for their most important tournament win of the season on Friday, Feb. 11, when Thiel and Washington & Jefferson come to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for the 2011 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships. The Jackets come into the event as the defending team champions.

WEXFORD, Pa. (Feb. 7) – After finishing its season on a big high note this past week, the Waynesburg University wrestling team added one last individual accolade to its collection courtesy of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

Freshman heavyweight Brandon Fedorka played a big role in a pair of Yellow Jacket victories this past week. For his efforts, the first-year standout was honored as the final PAC Wrestler of the Week for the 2010-11 season. He is the seventh different Jacket to receive the honor over the 11 weeks it was awarded, which featured 11 different athletes lauded.

Fedorka went 4-0 this week with two wins by major decision. He clinched Waynesburg’s 22-16 win over Division II West Liberty State with an 8-0 major decision, and followed that performance up by going 3-0 at the John Summa Memorial Tournament. He picked up a 12-2 major decision in the semifinals to make it to the title bout where he beat top-seeded John Wilkinson of SUNY-Brockport by 2-1 decision. Fedorka is now 16-4 on the season, has won 13 of his last 14 bouts and was mentioned under the “honorable mention” heading in the d3wrestle.com rankings.
