messiah open

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 22) – Members of the Waynesburg University wrestling team made the trip to Grantham, Pa. on Saturday to take part in the Messiah Open.

While most of the team's starters didn't make the trip, a pair of recent additions to the Yellow Jackets' starting lineup put together outstanding performances at the event. Freshman Sam Lombardo</roster.aspx?rp_id=2932> and junior Rico Borz</roster.aspx?rp_id=2912> both went undefeated at Messiah with Lombardo winning the 157-pound title and Borz defaulting out after reaching the semifinal round.

Lombardo, who won the Waynesburg Invitational and picked up a victory in his dual match debut on Thursday against Washington & Jefferson, went 4-0 on his way to the championship. He beat a pair of Division I wrestlers from Liberty University, including second-seeded Gabe Bird, a freshman who won over 200 high school matches, in his semifinal bout by 8-7 decision. Lombardo clinched the title with a 7-6 decision victory over Shane Everett of Wilkes. The freshman from Canonsburg ran his current unbeaten streak to 10 bouts. He is now 21-4 on the year.

Borz won his first three bouts of the day by decision before defaulting out of the tournament with a minor injury. After making his season debut with the team on Jan. 11, Borz is unbeaten in his first nine bouts of the year.

Freshman Colton Blumer</roster.aspx?rp_id=2925> placed fifth at 141 pounds after going 4-1 on the day with a win by fall and his only loss on the day came at the hands of Maryland's Frank Goodwin. The graduate of nearby West Greene High School upset third-seeded Nick Dragonette of Drexel in the fifth-place bout.

The Jackets also saw two of their own place at 197 pounds. Freshman Jake Linn</roster.aspx?rp_id=2930> and Tyler Lewis</roster.aspx?rp_id=2929> both made it to the third-place bout with Lewis defaulting to Linn for third place.

Waynesburg returns to dual match competition on Tuesday, Jan. 25, when they host Penn State New Kensington. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
